I am a 3 time cancer survivor , radiation sole job is to get rid of all the cancerous cells that have been living in the throat, yes your mom will loose her hair, start looking around for wigs something that fits your moms personality and if she doesn't want to do the wig style invest in pretty scarves and hats. My sister made hats for me to match my outfits when went in for my treatments.Im happy to know that you express unconditional love for your mom. You will forever be blessed. The road your mom is about to travel will be a tough one, "BUT" with a soldier for a daughter she will perserve.

most cancer patients lose hair cause the radiation still runs through the system. not sure how much though.

Yes, but not always. Radiation therapy has come a long way in thte past few years. What difference does it really make, though? Losing my hair is a small price to pay if I can live a longer or better quality of life. Slowly balding myself, it does have it's advantages. Even to an "egg"head like me.
Besides, I'm not losing hair. It is migrating to my nose, ears, back, shest, . . . .Thinking of it with a sense of humor removes some of the sting.

hair loss from radiation occurs only in the area being radiated. So for example, if you get radiation to your leg then you wont loose hair from your head. Now, the throat area is of course close to your head but you shouldn't loose your hair either.
