How should I chemically straighten my hair?

I was thinking of getting japanese straightening, but it's way too expensive. I've heard brazilian keratin treatment works well, but it's only semi-permanent. Is there an old fashioned relaxer that can be used to permanently straighten non-african hair. Someone said what I need is a perm, not a relaxer. What's the difference? I thought perms are only used for curling hair. Basically, what I'm looking for is inexpensive permanent or semi-permanent chemical straightening, and I definitely don't want to do it at home.

I would go to a black hair salon and have them do it. They work on all types of hair and have white clients.
